NatWest

Background, Issue & Challenges

NatWest manufactured, purchased, stored, personalised and distributed printed materials and stationery at a cost of approximately £85m p.a. Goods & services ranged from basic stationery to complex, variable print such as statements & business cards. JMCL’s role was to determine and implement a strategy for the optimal supply of these goods in future.

Process

Following our analysis and recommendations we delivered by:

Establishing a streamlined, focused Group Purchasing operation.

Outsourcing goods and services, which it was judged could be better provided externally. This included many printed products and the in-house distribution fleet.

Turning the remaining in-house units into centres of excellence.

Outcome/Results

The implementation was a huge success realising one-off savings of 25% and year on year reductions of 15% for 3 years. NatWest particularly praised our implementation for adapting strategy into workable solutions through involving the unions, operational management and shop-floor staff.

Over subsequent years, as markets changed, we sold and/or outsourced several in-house units which we’d previously turned into centres of excellence e.g. card personalisation.

What makes us so different?

Jonathan has made a massive contribution to the development of the strategy and, more importantly, to the implementation of that strategy. He has been involved in the development of each of the businesses, in the HR issues of the downsizing initiative, in the recruitment of new management and in the creation of internal processes for each of the new businesses. I would have no hesitation in recommending his wide range of skills. His contribution to the project was invaluable.
